Field Officer - Steve Basterfield

October 2008

Talk about a busy month since the last newsletter!  The Prevent effective practice visits are well underway and that is also proving a good opportunity to revisit some of the basic principles of NHP within my forces.

In early September I assisted in a Neighbourhood Improvement Workshop at Ribby Hall near Blackpool for two more of the Lancashire Police divisions.  Once again, this provided an ideal opportunity to discuss and further develop the excellent partnership work being done in Southern and Northern Divisions.  Many thanks to Chief Constable Steve Finnegan for taking the time to open the event and set the scene. A final event in November will then see the whole of the force having undertaken the NIWs experience.

From there it was down to Bramshill Police Training College for 2 days Team Planning where its always good to catch up with the other Field Officers and the London team.  Next stop was Kent where I assisted Tim Peacock with his 3 day Prevent visit before returning to the West Midlands where I represented the CF and NPP at the Federation of Small Business 3rd Annual Policy Dinner.  The focus of speeches by the FSB and Chief Constable Chris Sims of Staffordshire Police was “crimes against business – the forgotten fifth”. We have been working with FSB on a NHP guide for working with Businesses and further information on the Federation can be found at FSB.

Some excellent news to finish on – Merseyside Police have done it again!  Congratulations on winning the “Excellence In Policing Award” for Operation Morewood, an operation designed to improve levels of keeping people informed and of progress of the investigation of their crime.  Not only that, for the second year running they have been awarded with the National Customer Services Award (Public Services & Education) and this relates to increased access to services via the internet affording members of the public opportunities to give feedback of services provided and continued improvements relating to customer service. Supt Andy Fisher says that “both awards recognise the commitment and successes not only of the Citizen focus Dept but of all officers within Merseyside Police.  Winning the NCS award for a 2nd year is a fantastic achievement”.  Further information on work being undertaken can be found here.
