Crime Mapping

What?

Crime has an inherently geographical quality. For a crime to occur it involves an offender and a suitable target to come together at a specific location. Understanding which types of crime happen and where can offer vital clues to improving how the police respond.

The national Crime Map will be launched in Autumn 2009 which will enable forces to display crime statistics and linked neighbourhood policing information on a single website. This supports the Government’s vision for the future of policing laid out in the Home Office Green Paper ‘From the neighbourhood to the national’ and the Casey Review ‘Engaging communities in fighting crime’

Why?

There are strong indications that the more information people have about a service the more confident they feel in the delivery of that service.
The same is true for policing. Crime mapping is one way in which the service can provide more information to the public about crime in their area.

How?

The crime mapping project will deliver a national online platform to enable forces to display crime data in a consistent way across the country. The programme will provide guidance to forces on matters such as data sets and the displaying of offenders and justice outcomes online. This work is supported by the wider citizen focus and neighbourhood policing programme.

Although the system will provide national consistency the importance of
local context will be maintained. The national system will enable forces to
display context relating to the particular crime types at a neighbourhood
policing team level. Direct links to force websites will also be maintained.

This online solution enables information to be put into a context that will make it more meaningful to the end user (the public).

Who?

The National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) is a policing organisation that provides a central resource to the police service, working for ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers), APA (Association of Police Authorities) and the Home Office to improve the delivery of Policing.
